Central United Methodist Church

Welcome to our family! Whether you have family that is nearby or no family at all, you will find that Central United Methodist is a family in every sense of the word. Like most families, we are a kaleidoscope of varied faith journeys and experiences.

We are young, we are old, and we are in between. We are conservative, we are progressive, and many of us are not sure where we stand on theological issues. We are young parents who face raising children as couples and as singles. We are elders who face growing old and watching friends and loved ones leave us, and we wonder when it will be our turn. We are youth and college students who are confused by a world that doesn’t fit neatly into the faith boxes we had constructed as children, and we demand guidance for those difficult questions that elude easy answers. We are children who find that when we are here, the thoughtless remarks of kids on the school playground don’t hurt as much because we understand that we are loved by God and by the family that is Central UMC. Many of us are lost children who confront loneliness due to divorce, death, and alienation from others, and we have found God’s loving embrace through this family that affirms that we all–without any exceptions–are God’s children.

As with all families, our family here at Central embraces us no matter what we encounter in life. A family hugs you and dries your tears before asking any questions. A family is a safe refuge to which you can always return. As you listen to some of our individual experiences and faith journeys, we invite you to share your own story. Your story is vital to our family because you offer the unique perspective that is yours alone, and through that you enrich us as a family of faith.

A great page that open the church up to be “seen” by folks just surfing the net and a place where the church can “see” each other offering testimony about who Central is…Great start! Thanks crew!

We came to Central from Brookview UMC, when the original three churches merged back in 1988. We became more involved gradually as part of the small groups, first for me (Mary) as part of the chancel choir and then for both of us as part of the TLC (The Living Covenant) Sunday School Class. Mary has also enjoyed the various Bible studies, first those done by Pastor Carl and Pastor Linda Freeto and then the Serendipity study done by Chuck and Beverly Hill. We think that Central is a very friendly outgoing down-to-earth group of people trying our best to carry out God’s will for us in this place. We especially appreciate the various mission opportunities that are carried out by the different groups, namely the Youth group led by Beth Underwood and her helpers and the choir, led by Karen Hogue and others. Mary especially appreciates the multitude of musical talent that Central is blessed with, Led by Karen, Mike Makowski, Melanie Bost and others; it is a pleasure to be able to sing with them. We not only get to sing a variety of great music, but we enjoy great fellowship as well as support each other and the local church, as well as others in intercessory prayer.

Thanks Mary for sharing. You didn’t mention that you were a mainstay on the staff for several years. You did enough worrying about the church for all of us. Maybe you will share your gift for writing with us in the course of time.

Thanks, Pat, for the kind words. No, I didn’t mention being on staff – I guess I was separating, in my mind – work and worship. I was concentrating on speaking to the idea of how we came to Central in the beginning and what kept us here. Yes, I have to plead guilty to doing a “little bit” of worrying about the church at times. I also have to admit that it is nice to still be able to contribute some to the “bookkeeping end” of things without having to worry about some of the more “tedious tasks.” Seriously, the years I spent (10 1/2) on staff were basically very enjoyable and fulfilling for me. It gave me a place to use what I spent so many years trying to do for other companies before returning to school to complete the requirements for my degree in management/accounting. I had begun to think that I was “beating a dead horse” before going to work at Central.
